Triathlon is uniquely demanding on your nutrition because it asks you to fuel across three very different disciplines in sequence, each with its own constraints. You cannot eat while swimming, you can consume plenty on the bike, and running on a loaded stomach is uncomfortable. Fuelling a triathlon well means understanding those constraints and planning around them.
Whether you are racing a sprint or going long, a coherent fuelling plan across the whole race is what keeps you strong from the first stroke to the finish line. Here is how to build one.
Because the swim offers no chance to fuel, you start a triathlon relying entirely on what you took on beforehand. A carbohydrate-rich meal a few hours before, followed by a small top-up closer to the start, ensures you begin with full glycogen stores and stable energy.
For longer races, the pre-race loading principles of any endurance event apply in the day or two before. Starting well fuelled is especially important in triathlon, given the swim's fuelling blackout at the start.
