Many runners, cyclists and triathletes think of it as the preserve of bodybuilders and gym-goers, something to worry about only if you are trying to get big. In reality, protein plays an important role for endurance athletes, and under-consuming it can quietly undermine your recovery and adaptation.

Endurance training causes small-scale muscle damage and places ongoing demands on your body to repair and adapt. Protein provides the raw material for that repair and for the adaptations that make you a better endurance athlete, such as improvements in your muscles' capacity to work aerobically.

How you distribute protein across the day matters, not just the total. Spreading it fairly evenly across your meals, rather than loading most of it into one, supports ongoing repair more effectively. Including protein in your post-training recovery, alongside carbohydrate, is a particularly valuable habit.
