The day before a race or a match, most athletes eat carefully, sleep early, and then drink two litres of plain water before bed and wonder why they wake up sluggish, with heavy legs and a vague sense that something is off.
Water alone does not hydrate you. It dilutes you. And the distinction matters most in the twenty-four hours before you need to perform.
In the lead-up to a big event, your body is in a state of preparation that goes beyond glycogen loading and sleep. Fluid balance is being regulated at a cellular level, and the electrolytes that govern that balance, primarily sodium, but also potassium, magnesium, and chloride, determine how effectively water is absorbed and retained in the tissues that need it. Drink large volumes of plain water without adequate sodium, and you can actually lower plasma sodium concentration, which impairs fluid retention and can leave you feeling flat before you have even started.
The goal the day before is not to be maximally hydrated in the sense of drinking as much as possible. It is to arrive at your start line with plasma volume optimised and your cells neither waterlogged nor depleted. That requires electrolytes, and it requires thinking about your own physiology rather than following a generic protocol.
Sweat composition varies considerably between individuals. Some athletes lose sodium at rates two or three times higher than others at the same intensity and temperature. A person who is a heavy, salty sweater, identifiable by white residue on skin or kit, or a strong thirst response during exercise, has meaningfully different pre-event hydration requirements than someone with a lower sweat sodium concentration. Applying the same electrolyte dose to both athletes produces different outcomes.
This is where custom electrolyte formulations become relevant. Rather than a fixed-ratio product designed around an average, a formulation matched to your sweat profile allows you to replenish what you specifically lose. In the day before competition, when there is time to be deliberate, this level of precision is achievable and worth pursuing.
Start the morning with a sodium-containing drink rather than plain water. This primes the absorption process and helps the body begin retaining fluid rather than excreting it. Throughout the day, sip consistently rather than drinking large volumes infrequently, the kidneys handle smaller, regular inputs more efficiently than sudden surges.
With meals, include foods naturally higher in sodium and potassium: quality sources rather than processed salt. Eggs, fish, leafy greens, and bananas contribute meaningfully to electrolyte status alongside whatever you are eating for carbohydrate loading.
In the evening, a final electrolyte drink, ideally one calibrated to your individual needs, helps consolidate the work done through the day. This is not about drinking more; it is about ensuring the fluid you have consumed is being held in the right compartments.
Monitor urine colour as a rough guide, but treat it as one signal among several. Pale yellow is the target. Clear urine late in the evening can indicate over-hydration and sodium dilution, which is not a position you want to be in at the start line. Athletes who fixate on achieving clear urine often drink past the point of benefit, flushing electrolytes rather than retaining them and arriving at race morning in a worse fluid state than if they had done nothing at all.
Performance on race day is partly determined by decisions made in the preceding forty-eight hours. Hydration is one of the few variables you can control almost entirely in advance, and it is one that athletes consistently underestimate in its complexity. Plain water has its place. But the day before something that matters, the detail is in the electrolytes, and specifically, in the ones that match what your body actually needs.
