Most athletes drink by feel. Thirst rises, they reach for a bottle. Thirst fades, they stop. It is a system that works reasonably well at rest, and falls apart almost completely during hard exercise.
The problem is not that thirst is unreliable, it is that it lags. By the time the signal arrives, fluid losses have already accumulated. In a short session this barely matters. Across ninety minutes of team sport, a long ride, or a heavy gym session in a warm room, that lag compounds into something that genuinely affects how you feel and how you perform.
Sweat rate is the number that closes that gap. It is not complicated to measure, and understanding it changes how you approach hydration in a way that generic guidance simply cannot.
Sweat rate is expressed in litres per hour, and it varies considerably between individuals. Some athletes lose less than a litre per hour in moderate conditions. Others exceed two litres in heat or during intense effort. Neither figure is better or worse, it is just physiology, but the difference in what each person needs to drink is enormous.
The standard method for estimating sweat rate involves weighing yourself before and after a session of known duration, accounting for any fluid consumed during it. Each kilogram of body mass lost corresponds to roughly one litre of sweat. Divide by hours, and you have your rate.
What most athletes find when they do this for the first time is that their intuitive drinking habits are either significantly under or over what their body actually lost. The under-drinkers are more common, particularly in cooler conditions where sweat is less visible and thirst is suppressed.
Knowing how much you sweat tells you how much fluid to replace. But sweat is not just water. It carries sodium, chloride, potassium, and smaller amounts of other minerals. The concentration of those electrolytes in sweat varies between individuals just as much as sweat rate does, and the two do not necessarily correlate.
A high sweat rate athlete who also loses sodium at high concentration faces a compounding challenge. Replacing fluid without replacing sodium dilutes the blood, which can worsen rather than improve how they feel. This is why drinking plain water in large volumes during prolonged exercise sometimes leaves athletes feeling flat or nauseous even when they are technically hydrated.
The practical implication is that sweat rate data becomes most useful when paired with some understanding of electrolyte losses. Athletes who notice white residue on their skin or kit after sessions, or who experience cramping and headaches despite drinking adequately, are often dealing with high sodium losses that volume alone will not address.
Sweat rate is not fixed. It rises with temperature, humidity, exercise intensity, and fitness level. A number gathered in October training means something different in July competition. Tracking across conditions builds a picture that is genuinely useful rather than a single data point that gets over-applied.
The value of that picture is in specificity. A blanket recommendation to drink 500ml per hour suits some athletes and leaves others significantly short. An athlete who knows they lose 1.5 litres per hour in warm conditions, and who has noticed the signs of high sodium loss, can build a hydration approach around those realities rather than around averages that were never designed with them in mind.
Drinking by feel is not wrong. But it is a blunt instrument. Sweat rate gives you something sharper, a number that belongs to you, in your conditions, doing your sport.
