Most people leave the gym with a number in their head. The treadmill said 480. The watch said 390. The app said somewhere in between. None of them are particularly reliable, and the gap between what you think you burned and what you actually burned has real consequences for how you eat around training.
The honest answer is that calorie expenditure during a gym session varies more than most people expect, not just between individuals, but within the same person across different days, different sessions, and different phases of training.
The variables that determine how many calories you burn in 60 minutes are numerous, and body weight, the one factor most calorie calculators lean on hardest, is only the beginning. A 90kg person doing a moderate-intensity circuit will burn more than a 65kg person doing the same session, broadly speaking. But the type of work matters enormously.
A 60-minute strength session built around compound lifts, squats, deadlifts, rows, involves significant rest periods. The actual time under tension might be 15 to 20 minutes of that hour. Calorie burn during those rest periods drops sharply. Compare that to 60 minutes of continuous moderate-intensity cardio, where the metabolic demand stays elevated throughout, and you're looking at a very different energy cost despite the same clock time.
Estimates for resistance training typically sit somewhere between 200 and 400 calories per hour depending on intensity, load, and rest periods. Steady-state cardio at a moderate pace might land between 400 and 600. High-intensity interval work can push higher, but sessions rarely sustain that intensity for a full hour.
Wearable devices estimate calorie burn using heart rate as a proxy for metabolic rate. This works reasonably well for steady aerobic work, where heart rate and oxygen consumption track closely together. It works less well for resistance training, where heart rate can spike during a heavy set and then drop quickly during rest, and where the relationship between heart rate and actual energy expenditure is less linear.
Studies comparing wearable device estimates against laboratory measurements have consistently found meaningful discrepancies, often in the range of 20 to 30 percent, and sometimes higher. The direction of error tends to be overestimation, which matters if you're using that number to justify eating more.
One thing no calorie counter captures is the energy your body continues to spend after training ends. Resistance training in particular elevates metabolic rate for hours post-session, sometimes up to 24 hours, as the body repairs muscle tissue and restores homeostasis. This excess post-exercise oxygen consumption is real, but it's also modest. It adds something meaningful over time, but it won't double your calorie burn for the day.
The more important point is that muscle mass itself raises your resting metabolic rate. Someone who has trained consistently for years and carries more lean mass will burn more calories at rest than someone of the same body weight who hasn't. The gym session is only one part of that picture.
Chasing an exact calorie number from any single session is probably the wrong frame. The more useful question is whether your nutrition is calibrated to the overall demand of your training week, not just the acute burn of any given hour.
If you're training four times a week with a mix of resistance and conditioning work, your energy needs across the week will be substantially higher than on rest days. Building your nutrition around that pattern, rather than trying to offset each session individually, is where the real leverage sits.
