Most athletes check their resting heart rate and then do nothing with the information.
It sits there in a wearable app, a single number among dozens, occasionally noticed and rarely acted on. Which is a shame, because of all the physiological signals available to athletes without a lab, resting heart rate might be the most honest.
It doesn't respond to optimism. It doesn't care that you slept in your own bed or that you feel fine. It reflects what your autonomic nervous system is actually doing, the balance between sympathetic drive and parasympathetic recovery, and that balance shifts in ways that are meaningful if you know how to read them.
Before resting heart rate becomes useful, it needs context. A single reading tells you almost nothing. A pattern tells you a great deal.
Establishing your true baseline requires consistency: same time each morning, before you get up, before caffeine, before the mental load of the day kicks in. For most trained athletes, this number will sit somewhere between 40 and 60 beats per minute, though the range varies considerably with age, training history, and genetics. What matters isn't where your number falls on a population chart, it's where it falls relative to your own established norm.
Once you have that baseline, deviations become signal.
A resting heart rate that runs three to five beats above your personal baseline on a given morning is worth noting. Seven or more beats above baseline is worth acting on.
That elevation can mean several things, and distinguishing between them matters. Acute illness, even a low-grade infection before symptoms appear, reliably raises resting heart rate. So does significant psychological stress, poor sleep, alcohol consumed the night before, and accumulated training load that the body hasn't yet absorbed.
The tricky part is that these causes aren't mutually exclusive. A hard training block during a stressful work period, with disrupted sleep, compounds. The heart rate elevation in that scenario isn't telling you one thing, it's telling you that multiple systems are under strain simultaneously, and adding another hard session to the pile may not produce the adaptation you're chasing.
A resting heart rate that gradually drops over weeks is generally a sign of improving aerobic fitness. The heart is becoming more efficient, stroke volume increases, and fewer beats are needed to maintain cardiac output at rest. This is the adaptation endurance training is designed to produce.
But a resting heart rate that drops sharply over a short period, particularly alongside fatigue, reduced motivation, or declining performance, can indicate overreaching. The autonomic nervous system shifts in a way that suppresses sympathetic tone, sometimes described as parasympathetic overtraining, and the result can look superficially like fitness while actually representing a system under duress.
This is where athletes get caught. The number looks good. The body doesn't feel it yet. The next two weeks of training confirm something is wrong.
The value of resting heart rate isn't in any single morning's reading. It's in the trend, and in the discipline of responding to what the trend suggests rather than what the training plan demands.
On a day when your resting heart rate is elevated and your sleep was poor, the question isn't whether you can complete the session. You probably can. The question is whether completing it moves you forward or simply adds to a debt that will come due later.
Your resting heart rate won't make that decision for you. But it will give you better information than how you feel standing in the kitchen at 7am, telling yourself you're fine.
